This is well said. We imagine the terrorists to be uncouth men hidden away in mountains acting on a medieval agenda. This may be true but the means they use to wreak destruction indicate the use and knowledge of modern technology and expertise in communications and intelligence gathering. Most of those involved in the hijackings on 9/11 were University graduates. Many militant groups are using sophisticated websites to expound their ideologies. Nearly two decades and an immense amount of resources had gone into recruitment, training and indoctrination of the militants who have now brought the war home. Reversing the effects created over decades will also require an equally monumental effort to fight the battle on multiple levels. Whereas it is logical to understand the anger of the militants and make practical efforts to resolve the issues as Hakim said, an intellectual effort by the people of the Islamic world to reject the false ideologies is called for. The struggle against extremism will not be won without the support of the people who need to speak with a single voice to defang the venomous and false ideologies. As of now the voices of reason and common sense are being simply drowned out by the din of hatred. Sarah Humayun wrote, “Suicide bombers were once not suicide bombers. There are others who are not yet suicide bombers. Can something be done about the not-yets, or have we made up our minds that we are concerned with stamping out only the suicide bomber in his finished form?”

Post Script- Islamabad To me a visit to Islamabad means calm, mist, mountains and sun. Once in the city, we gravitate to the hilltops in search of clouds and serenity. It almost invariably rains when we leave the tree lined city amidst the mountains. And the moon with its image in the water below never fails to remind us of melodies of a bygone age. Now the peace is broken and tranquility gone. With pain etched across their faces, people ask, ‘Will our lives ever be the same again?’
